Question ATF in fuel

Hi,Aguy that had a bunch of school bus with 7.3 was saying that when he had a rough idle or something in one he'd put a quart of ATF in the fuel tank and it would clear most of the problem. He used to put around a million K on them motors. What's your opinion on ATF in fuel. Thanks

Cool ATF in fuel

Stenadyne is best, I add it at every fuel stop as I don't trust the fuel in my area that much. ATF is meant for a tranny, not a motor in my book anyway, jut my $.02.

ATF in fuel

ATF will work, but I would recommend "Fred's Hair Tonic" Stanadyne as it's designed by the same folks that make the fuel system, so they should know what it needs, and it looks nothing like ATF.

larry2000,
How did an inspector get involved with your fuel system?

ATF in fuel

Actually, there is some validity to this question. When I worked for a Mercedes dealer in MN, we made sure every diesel owner had a can of ATF in their trunk in the event they had bad fuel, ie water in it. ATF when added to diesel fuel has water dispersement properties. I added 1 pint to my fuel every oil change (3000 miles) to combat condesation, common in the upper middwest. Worked well in 500, 000 miles of personal use in the 2 MB 240Ds I owned. I don't recall anyone checking fuel for dye traces back then in cars, only semis.
