PS-just for the info, when that fuse blows what is killing the engine?
That fuse also sends power to the PCM. When it blows, the PCM looses power too.

Thanks for all the info!

I found a replacement coil online for $33 and it looks pretty easy to replace: 2 screws and the wire connection. I'll probably just unhook it for now and replace it later.

As long as you are fueling with winter blend diesel, which most fuel stops are required to carry during winter, you will not gel up. I run the White Bottle of Diesel Kleen too, and have been able to start down to -36 without a block heater... not intentionally but didn't have power within miles...

And for our untrained viewers in the audience, what is that you are referring to exactly?

The pipe in the center of the fuel bowl, that the filter slips over.

Update: Today I finally had a day off to get into the repair. The heater coil was no longer soldered to the baseplate and it was actually arcing, which is a great demonstration of what a high flash point diesel has. See attached photos.

The OCD side of me decided to replace the coil, so I am waiting for that new coil to arrive on Tuesday. It is not an OEM piece of crap like this one. It is a Dorman heating coil and it looks like a much better coil and has good customer reviews. Prior to that my plan was to unhook the wire from the outside......which now I discovered would be harder than heck and easier to unhook it from the inside. I think I misunderstood.

Thanks for everyone's help. This forum is worth its weight in gold. Y'all have saved me a ton of money and frustration.

Where are you located? You mean to tell me there is actually a state more hard core on emissions than California? My '97 is exempt...hard to believe, but true story.

Ada County, Idaho (Boise), every 2 years now.

A non-funny story attached to that. I bought this truck used and it was straight-piped. The first 4-5 years that I owned it I passed emissions every time. During that time period it was an annual test. Then one year the punk at the emissions station put his little bomb mirror under the truck and saw that I had no catalytic converter and he failed me.....even though the emissions coming out of the truck was just fine. I had to get a cat put on it and retested and sadly the truck has never been the same. It sounded like a jet engine spooling up before. The wife and I are getting ready to buy a place in a neighboring county that has no emission testing. I intend to get a fake cat on it and restore it's glory after we move.
