Brake lights not working?

I'm having a problem with my actual brake lights - if I mash the pedal to the floor, they work. On general use though, they are not there! Any ideas?

Check the actuator. The brake pedal rests against it when it is up, and when you press the brake pedal the actuator pops down and sets off the brake lights. It sounds like yours is sticking or misadjusted.

The brake light switch is attached to the brake pedal where the brake booster (or MC) pushrod attaches. When you push the pedal, it pushes the switch, which pushes the pushrod. If the pushrod is too soft (air in the brakes or overactive booster), then the pushrod moves before the switch closes, and the lights don't come on.

You can try changing the switch to start with, but I suspect you'll be bleeding your brakes to get rid of the problem.

Thanks guys! Pulled the switch off of the pedal, & it turned out to be the plate that sits against the rod - it was bent & not coming in contact with the rod until it hit the "perfect" angle. Straightened & brakelights now work perfectly!
