I have a 1991 F150 XLT Lariat that is currently leveled with 33x12.5x15 BFG mud terrains. I know a lot of people have asked discussed this but I have yet to find out what I really need. My 33s rub a tad at a full turn with the level. What is the lowest body lift or suspension lift I would need to clear 35s?? I have a 3" Performance Accessories body lift kit that I got for free but haven't put on. I'm not sure if I want a body lift since all it does is lift the body(obviously), but suspension lifts are pricey. I like the look of my truck now but I want 35s. I want them to be as flush in the wheel well without rubbing, or trimming anything. You think a 2.5" suspension lift would do the trick? I know suspension lifts sag a little so maybe not. Maybe a 3" or 4". Idk, any and every suggestion will be considered and help me a lot.
I would go with your 3in body life. A body lift does the same as suspension.
Wrong.
A body lift puts undue stress on components that weren't designed for that stress. It also forces the use of longer body bolts, which are weaker than stock bolts. A body lift also doesn't increase wheel travel, some suspension lifts do.
To the OP: Your tires are going to rub on the radius arms, regardless of what type of lift you put on, if you're using stock wheels, or wheels with stock backspacing. The only way to change that is to use wheels with a different backspacing.
General rule of thumb is 4" lift for 33s, 6" lift for 35s.
While I agree with you that body lifts aren't the best, I don't think they're as bad as people make them out to be. I've seen hundreds of trucks running them locally and online. If I had a free one, you can bet your *** I'd be putting it in. I love the look of a 6" suspension with 3" body and 37s.
Hope your gears aren't stock. I had 35's (measured 35.5 inches tall BALD fully inflated) and with the stock 3.55 gearing my 5.8 felt gutless. In my opinion, it is NOT worth it. I hated everything about my 35's...
As for body lifts, I will never trust them. I had a friend in high school learn quickly why they suck. He got t-boned waiting to pull out of a parking lot. The cab shifted about 4" on the mounts. Every bolt was severely bent. If you can't afford a proper suspension lift, you cant afford to have a lifted truck. Simple as that.
4.56 minimum for me. I still find the 3.55's to be poor with my 33's. I lock out the overdrive until I go above 55. I have decided to not mess with gears in my truck. I will be getting a commuter car here within the next year and removing the truck from DD duty. She is just too thirsty to drive daily. Will be even worse when my commute jumps from less than 5 miles a day to 30+. After that I will likely pull the lift and the 33's in favor of stock height and tire size.
I went from 3.08 to 3.55 with my 33s so I can see how bad it really could be. I have a 300 so too much gear and it becomes useless. I still pull almost 20 mpg with my setup.
