Looking to get a long block at the beginning of the year. My questions are as follows...
#1- Front or rear dipstick? Does it even matter? Mine is in the front currently.
#2- Head casting numbers. The options appear to be D8OE or D5OE. Also, do I need smog holes? (No emissions in my area).
#3- My current motor is tired, leaky and has a knock. Should I focus on just having the bottom end rebuilt and adding the same go fast goodies I planned on for the long block?
There is no such thing as numbers matching on your truck. There is no VIN number associated with the motor. And yes as far as I know the front dipstick is a car motor, front sump oil pan. A 4wd had a rear sump pan and the dipstick was located on the driver side of the block. Is your truck 2wd? May explain the front dipstick.

My 2wd 400 has front dipstick and front sump pan. I would not trust a parts house reman engine. What motor is it and I can give better advice on what to do.

302's are a fun little engine.
If you were closer.... I have a really nice set of GT40 Cast Iron Heads. I bought them from a speed shop in Oceanside, CA. The owner was going to put them in his personal rig untill they went with a larger engine.
Also have a Weiand Stealth manifold and a Mallory Unilite Distributor.
I don't see me building another 302 for some time...

79 and earlier the dipstick is in the front.
Front Sump pans was used in most everything pre 1980.
1980 was the dividing year for trucks and Ford went to a rear sump pan.
