I have '78 300 with the dip stick just above the motor mount. I am in the process of a rebuild, but the new block has the dip stick in the pan. I would like to convert this block and put the dipstick back by the mount. It looks like the factory just put a plug in the hole.
Does anyone have experience with this? Does it need to be drilled?
I checked the book for the block numbers of the one I pulled to replace my current '78 engine. The one I pulled was from a 75 van. According to the book, the same numbers of blocks could have either the dipstick just above the driver side motor mount, or in the oil pan.
However, they are, as I found out, interchangable. If the stick is in the pan, the factory just put a little plug in the motor mount hole, which is easily tapped out with a punch and hammer.
