Was just wondering if anyne has done the conversion from non A/C to A/C before, if so could use some tips. Thanx . Sorry the vehicle was a 1987 Ranger. Thanks again
If you want A/C, that's undoubtedly the cheapest & best way to get it. On fullsize trucks, it's pretty easy to drop the dash & swap out the ventilation system, so I'd expect that one to be similar.
I realize that it would be the cheapest way. Do you know how long it should take. Is this a weekend project. Also do I need to change the heater core as well. Thanx
How long it takes depends on you. If you know what you're doing, you have ALL the parts, and it's as easy in your truck as it is in mine, it can be done in a few hours. Otherwise, who knows? Get the Haynes manual &/or look it up here. I'm not familiar enough with the little trucks to know how much stuff you'd have to change or how long it would take.
it isn't hard, just takes time.
If you have a donor, just work a litttle at atime. it is worth it.
Just a word of caution about cost of r12 vs. r134a. big difference.
In the old systems, 12 works the best, but they dont make it or sell it anymore. I've found that Freeze 12 by johnsens works really well. I replaced every part of the AC unit on my 91 f150, so i guess this would be like installing it from scratch. It wasnt too much work. The problem with 134a is that it runs at much higher pressures. You can make it work, but i would suggest changing the condensor. The 134a condensor has smaller tubes and there are more of them so the refridgerant is cooled more efficiently. Also one thing you might want to do is make sure that your fan clutch and shroud are good so that you pull the most air through the condensor you can.
Thats great, but I am starting to have second thoughts about putting the A/C in, I heard that a common problem with 2.9 was blowing head gaskets, now I'm not sure if that was true or not. If you or anyone has some insight on that please let me know. Thanx
