Hey guys,
I have a 2004 Explorer 4.0L with 190,000 miles. My wife was driving it and the vehicle stopped moving. Sounds like the torque converter whining and will not drive in any gear or 4wd. Any ideas?
Get your checkbook or MasterCard out. Most likely you need a new trans. Even if it is just the TC, you need your trans gone through as all the debris from a TC failure is now lurking in the trans. 190k on one of these isn't bad.
Do you know a trusted shop that works on these? There are some issues with them, and you may get lucky on getting it fixed without a reman or replacement, but it sounds to me like it's done. Mine broke the input shaft when it died, so there was no fixing that. (ESP to the rescue....)
