400 break in

after my last cam failed I decided to almost completely rebuild my motor I got a Lunati bracket master 2 cam and lifter kit, comp cams high energy push rods triple valve springs retainers and 10 degree four groove valve locks, edelbrock performer intake, holley 750 double pumper, summit headers, I had the valves cleaned and bosses milled down for comp cams roller rockers and ARP studs. using stock size valves. I got a re ring kit and crank re ground with new bearings. im going to get the msd street fire ignition box, steel spool, 3.89 gears and a 3300 stall torque converter. When I first run the motor to break in everything, do I need to take out the inner valve springs? and what kind of power should I be making? thanks.

Try to get the single valve groove type and one piece. Better grip than multi-groove.what kind of pistons are you using?

Get a dedicated break in oil. One that has lots of zinc in it. I would definitely remove a spring even though it's a pain.

I am gonna get comp cams break-in additive. Will I need to use the additive after I change the oil post break in?

Get an oil pump primer shaft to prime the engine before startup.

. Yes, I think I used a 5/16" socket to prime my 351W... taped the socket to the extension to make sure it didn't fall down inside the engine...

. Triple valve springs sounds like this is a very high RPM engine... with a lot of spring pressure... is it a roller cam/roller lifters?

. Are these basic rebuilder cast pistons or the stronger hypereutectic cast pistons?

. Stock rods?

. Stock heads?

. A "spool" sounds like the truck is only for racing of some type...

. Sounds like at least 350-400 HP... depending on other spec.s...

the springs are the lower pressure 924-16 if I remember correctly I got the ones my instructor told me to- I'm in auto mechanics at my local community college. the pistons are hypereutectic. the rods I'm not sure. they came with the pistons. stock heads with the mentioned work. block is bored 30 over.

. Those aren't actually "triple" valve springs, but dual springs with a dampener coil between the real springs.

. Designed for 1.9" seat height and up to .700" lift... does your cam have near that much lift? Can you get to that installed height?

. Was the spring pocket in the heads big enough for the outer spring to set down into?

. With 112 lbs. seat pressure, shouldn't need to remove other spring for breakin with either a flat tappet or roller cam setup...

. That 224/234 cam Lunati is actually fairly big for truck use, lopey idle, will start pulling hard around 2500-3000 RPMs... pull strong beyond 6000 RPMs with 11.5-12.5:1 compression ratio and big enough head ports/valves...

. I have a 224/234 Summit cam for a SBC 405" engine w/ MoTown heads I'm building for car usage...

I like my bracket master. has 112 LSA and 300 or 310 duration. I forgot. good lope with some glass packs. I can't wait to get it going. I'll have headers with cutouts. I'll be the annoying guy down the road. lol
