ZF 5 speed question

Is it possible to swap the gears from an the close ratio S5-42 into a wide ratio S5-47? I do some truck pulling and need the faster 2nd gear.

I think that it might be possible to alter the ratios some if you can disassemble the countershaft and press (shrink-fit) new gears on the countershaft to go along with different gears on the mainshaft. I don't think you will be able to swap the whole gearset because in addition to having a different tooth count on the input gear, the pilot and clutch spline area is also different between gas and diesel versions.

I am assuming you are talking diesel?

If so and you have a s42 to swap gears sets from, just use the whole trans

O. NO you can NOT mix and match gears. you can swap ALL the gears, but not individual ones

IIRC, the bellhousing on the 7.3 idi and 460s was the same, so you could bolt one transmission up to the other... though, I think some bolt holes don't exist in one side or another, so you might have to do some drilling/tapping.
