I think that it might be possible to alter the ratios some if you can disassemble the countershaft and press (shrink-fit) new gears on the countershaft to go along with different gears on the mainshaft. I don't think you will be able to swap the whole gearset because in addition to having a different tooth count on the input gear, the pilot and clutch spline area is also different between gas and diesel versions.
IIRC, the bellhousing on the 7.3 idi and 460s was the same, so you could bolt one transmission up to the other... though, I think some bolt holes don't exist in one side or another, so you might have to do some drilling/tapping.

NOPE. not the same. Have to drill new holes and open up others
