The shaft seal seeps PS fluid on my PS pump. Advance has a Power Steering Pump seal kit. My repair manual calls for a special tool to remove the pump pully and another to instsall it. Does anyone have knowledge about how to acquire the tools or a suitable substitute for the job?
You have to be careful about using a gear puller. You can break part of the lip off, this will cause the pulley to be unbalanced and destroy the pump. You can also bend the pulley or break the pulley. I've done all three trying to use gear pullers. Buy one specifically for power steering pump pulleys. Usually they have the part that you use to put it on with.
I picked up my P.S. pully puller about three years ago for about 20 bucks. you can get them at almost any auto parts store anymore. and usually they come with the piece needed to put the puly back on, mine did anyway.
Jbalestri,
I hope you didn't just jinx me, I have done about 5 or 6 pumps like this with no probs yet, but as I think about it I should probably just go buy the right tool next time I need it.
Not intending to. Last time I used a gear puller, I had to drive about 30 miles to find a pulley. That wasn't fun in a truck that is designed for power steering and doesn't have a belt on it.
Just some words from my experience. I had done a few and ran into a stubborn one.
Thanks for the info. Picked up a puller kit at Autozone for $29.00. Napa had one for $68.00 in a much nicer case. The less expensive kit worked fine. I was able to install the seal kit ($15.00) for my PS pump. The job seems to be holding up fine thus far. If you decide to try this you will need a very large c clamp or a shop press and the detailed instructions from a good service manual. I have a 1990 Ford factory manual for body chassis and electrical. I used a shop press very gingerly.
Lisle makes a PS pulley puller kit. BUY THE KIT to remove and install the pulley. I have replace several "new PS pumps" because of the use of a regular gear puller and the customer was lucky that is all I had to replace. If you bend (and most likely will) the pulley. The only source for many pulleys at a price of $80.00 to $200.00. Not to mention the belts you replace every few days form the bent pulley through them.
I got mine off the Snap-on truck years ago. They sold me two different sizes and I never used one of them. Resist any urge to use that crappy althread installer that comes with a reman pump. Also my installer came from Snap-on and is a bit cumbersome. It is best used by clamping the threaded bolt part in the vise because you basically need three hands to use it. I had to change a pump on a early 80s Eldorado once that required the pully to be removed to get at one of the pump mounting bolts. I ended up putting a hole in the pulley to access the bolt since there was just no way to use that installer with the pump mounted.
