Im new to the forums, and have a little problem. I just picked up a 1997 f250 XL with the 5.8l. While driving it home my dad noticed that it was shifting in and out of overdrive(he thinks). Usually started around 50-60 mph. we took it on the country roads and had no problems, no faster than 45mph. Just wondering what this could be. im Getting ready to do a complete tune up and would like to know if this is a bad transmission or something small. thanks a lot.
Quite simple dude! Usually it is the overdrive switch; Had the same problem TWO years ago with my 1996 F250 HD 4x4. Went to the dealer to buy one (along with the plastic ring that holds it in) and replaced the WHOLE switch in the shift ****... easy to change out.
Be careful.
Now check the wires UNDER the truck in and about the tranny area also, for damage.
