hey, I have a 94 bronco xlt and having a bit of a problem. Whenever I get over 40 mph, and I let off the gas, there is a vibration, but it goes away after a couple seconds of coasting. On top of that, whenever I step back on the gas, I hear and feel a pop. Any takers on what it could be? I checked the driveshaft and the u joints and they seem pretty sturdy. I would appreciate the help.
remove the rear drive shaft and drive in 4wd (front wheel drive in this case) and see if the problem still happens. if it doesnt then that driveline perhaps needs rebuilt.
You can't completely diagnose a U-joint problem by simply grabbing the driveshaft to see if it's lose.. assuming you even did that test correctly which is block the wheels and put the trans in neutral to unload the driveshaft. That still won't tell you if the joints are dry and partially seized, to know that you have to pull the driveshaft out completely and check that the joints move smoothly on both axis. And while it's out check the pinion yoke for play, it's common for the pinion nut to work lose especially if the truck has oversized tires and/or the truck sees aggressive use.
Iv'e been chasing a similar problem on the '94 f150 I'm driving. Vibrates when accelerating at 50mph, let off throttle it stops, starts right back when back into throttle, unless you ease into it or mash on it. Have eliminated driveshaft, but not the pinion.
Definitely unload the driveline and look carefully at the u-joint caps and check for play at slip yoke and pinion yoke.
I don't believe it is coming from the rear diff area because when it pops, I feel it right under my seat. So I'm thinking its a bearing or something in the transfer case. But I have a stripped bolt up there so I can't take the drive shaft out. Any takers on how to get it out? Its the bolt head and it still isn't broken free. Had a hell of a time with the other 3
If yours is equipped with one it is on the front of the drive shaft it has two u-joints in it and a swivel between the u-joints and it bolts to the yoke of the transfer case I'm not sure what year Ford stopped using them my 95 doesn't have one but all the other broncos I've owned had one I've had an 80, 84, two 86s a 89 and a 95
finally got the driveshaft off today. Ran into a problem. One of the bolts on the tranfercase side was seized and stripped so I had to cut it out. Haha. Need a new bolt now. That's as far as I got. Driveshaft and u joints seem fine to me. So is there a bearing in the t case? I'm gonna flush the fluid out and put new stuff in. Not sure what else to do right now.
yeah. Just put some in. Put the driveshaft on. When doing so a clump of mud fell out of the rear u joint. And now I notice some play in it. Gonna run to the store and pick one up I guess and give that a shot.
