SYNC compatibility w/iphone 5s?
I'm in a bit of an interesting situation, with my truck and work: work "pays" me to use my truck for work, and provides me a free phone, in current case, an iphone 4s, which is due next month for the "new every two" years upgrade.
Now- my new to me truck has me spoiled to the technology available via the SYNC setup in it, so I'm trying to get the most out of it, within what work will let me do with my phone, and my question is rather simply: what current AT&T carrier phones will receive and send text messages via SYNC?
I'm having some difficulty confirming the latest phones or steps/processes that allow full text msg interactivity, and I'm also having some issue confirming the system in my truck....It's supposed to be updated to the latest 3.2.5 OS, as is my current iphone, OS 7.0.4, but (and I'm expecting this to be the case, based on what I've read so far) the iphone 4 doesn't allow for the text msg feature.
The goal here is to confirm that the iphone5s is fully text msg compatible, or I need to try and "steer" work into purchasing me a phone that is

The system in my truck is the touchscreen with the voice-activated nav, but I don't think it's the technical "my ford touch" SYNC system

The basic problem comes from the fact that my SYNC currently mutes the iphones text message chime alert when I'm not in the media-in via bluetooth menu, which I never am, so I never know when I'm driving when I get a text message, which is annoying....
I've had to resort to taking my phone off my hip everytime I get in the truck and setting it on the center console with me to stay in touch, and I just don't think, with today's technology, I should have to. I've locked it in and walked off without it too many times
and ok guys, this isn't a crisis on a scale of global proportions, but hey, I want this to work like I think it ought to be able to

Way to much to read, cut to the chase next time

I have a 2013 F250 with Mytouch SYNC, I could not text with my Iphone 4S or my Iphone 5. Hope that helps

In terms of the muting issue, you can bypass that by changing the audio output source of your phone. With iOS 7, you should be able to pull up command center (swiping up from the bottom of the screen) and see the chosen output method. When your phone is synced to the truck, it will say the output is via SYNC bluetooth. If you change the output to "iPhone", you will be able to hear the message tones. This will not affect your ability to make phone calls over bluetooth and the truck's speakers. It's a stupid system, but I do this every day and it works fine for me. If you want to stream music through SYNC, you'll have to switch the output back to "SYNC."
Works well.

The rest of y'all, I appreciate your responses too, but there's something "newer" about yall's 13+ trucks than my '11, so your answers may not apply.... I swear I've read somewhere that the 5 was able to be setup or reset or something, to work with my "old" SYNC system. Again, that's just some of where my confusion comes from, sorry...
I've got no love at all for my iphone, and the only reason I'm using AT&T is because work pays for it, so if I can "choose" my next phone, I'd love for it to be text compatible with my SYNC.
Any idea when the last time that compatibility list was updated? I don't see a lot of the newer phones on it.

On the Sync text issue, my Droid Razr used to text with my Sync. I don't know if it was a Sync update or an Android update, but somewhere along the line I lost that ability. Sync leaves a lot to be desired, but it sure is a lot better than the old 6 disc changer head unit that came in my 06.

But my SYNC has the "text messaging" menu, and I can access it, even try to send a canned response, but I get the error that my current phone doesn't support, so I'm hoping by changing phones I can get that ability

...There are two things I want you to check. The first is under your iPhone Bluetooth settings: tap on the blue arrow next to SYNC, then make sure your notifications preference is set to ON.
Second, while navigating the PHONE menu in SYNC, make your way to SYSTEM SETTINGS>ADVANCED>MAP PROFILE. Hit OK on MAP PROFILE, then select the ENABLE MAP PROFILE option. MAP stands for Message Access Profile, which is the bridge between SYNC and your iPhone that allows your text messages to be read. Give the above steps a try and let me know how it goes.
