I heard from somebody that has been off-roading for 16 some years that you can tie a heavy duty rope around a tree and tie a rope through the rear wheels and the wheel will act like a winch!!! Would that work, I haven't tried it, but he says it's worked many times.
Yea, I have "heard" about it, but, never seen anyone do it. Supposedly if you are stuck in light mud, use 2x4, and put in on the wheel that is spinning. Then again most rope only has a working limit of 1,000 pounds, as soon as you get tension on the rope, an open diff. will put torque to the other wheel, etc. The real problem is the wheel is turning in the opposite direction you are being pulled.
Did he explain that the rope had to follow the tire tread? If it doesn't then it will get twisted around the rear-end housing, crunching brake lines, etc. Yes, it can be done and has been done by some old friends of mine, but it is risky. I was told that you either have to have someone guiding the rope (not ME!) or you have to let the air out of the tire. But, when you're miles from civilization and you gotta get out...you might try anything.
I've doubled a chain before, hooked one end to the truck and the ohter tied to a tree, stuck a green sapling in the center and twisted it like winding up a rubber band and pulled myself back far enough to get out. Yep, a person can get out of almost anything if he wants to...almost.
I`ve heard of the rope winch on a wheel. Didn`t see it work. The only difference is that this guy was doing it with a dually, which makes more sense to me.
I saw one once where the guy had "U" shaped pieces of metal welded to the outside of the wheel around the outside to guide the rope. I would have to have him rub me on the road with that thing!
Yes, that procedure (and many other "field expedients") is detailed in the Army manual FM 20-22, which I've scanned & OCR'ed. The document is 19M, but if anyone wants it and has an ISP that can handle it, I'll e-mail it. You might be able to find it immediately on BroncoData since I sent it to him a few months ago. He may have it listed by its title "Vehicle Recovery Operations". The field expedients are all in Ch.6 .
New an old timer that carried a rim with cable spoold up on it . He said he would pull a tire off and put this thing on when stuck but it had to be a fairly straight pull. I think I'll stick with my worn, but I'm sure this system has pulled a lot of old timers out.
my dad was tellin me one time about a relitive, russ, my aunts father in law , that during world war II when they were using jeeps but still had mules there was a contest between the guy in charge of the mules and and the jeep guys, one of which was russ, on who could make it up a certain mountain first. as the story goes, they took a tire off the jeep and tied a rope to the axle and used it to winch them up the mountain! and yes the jeeps beat the donkeys.
also, steve could you send me that?
