Glowplug Controller Problem?
So no dice on cold starts this winter, preheat light was on for just a couple seconds at a time, researched here and other forums, concluded bad glow plugs. Replaced all eight, now(and I don't remember which occurred first) no preheat light at all. I ran a hot lead straight to the "purple wire" on the relay, wasn't purple but I figured it out, got the click, so now the problem is with the controller? Another strange symptom: some time ago the overheat annunciator under the preheat light came on and is now permanent, any relation?? Thanks in advance for the help!

The older system your '84 has doesn't go to the short cycle that the '87 and newer do, so your problem is a dead controller. When you hook up the temporary switch to the relay you are bypassing the controller and the operator becomes the controller.

As far as the overheat light, unplug the sensor foremost on the drivers side head, if the light goes out the sensor is shorted and needs to be replaced.
