New to ford

I just got a 99 navigator. It's the first ford product I've ever had. It seems like a pretty nice rig. Definitely the most luxurious since my 97 eldorado. My main question about the truck is the drivers door lock. It won't lock. I can hear the actuator when I hit the button but the rod is in a bind. I took off the panel and got elbow deep in that door. Even grabbing ahold of the rod I can't move it up or down. It looks like there's three rods connected in the locking mechanism. I have no idea which might be the problem. I assume since the actuator is trying that it's good? I'm hoping that this might be something common and you guys might know the fix for it. The rod going to the key cylinder was disconnected. I'm guessing that was someone else's attempt to fix something. Other than that are there any other common issues I should watch out for. I've heard bad things about the transmission. Is that true? Thank you all in advance.
