Well, I traded my glow plugs for spark plugs, and looking at all eight of them makes me wonder if this 460 is running to lean. They are all snow white all around, center electrode looks fine, no unusual wear. they are autolite 25`s with the proper gap, and the check engine light is off, no codes stored. Are those plugs not supposed to be light brown around the center electrode. Anyone out there with a 460 efi having similar experience?
My truck is a `92 with 172000 miles, runs great, no over heating.
White would be lean I'd rather see a tan color on the center electrode, if the O2 sensor hasn't been changed recently it's probably overdue... they can drift to the lean or rich side with age and still switch normally.
0two sensor was my guess also, but would that not trip a code if it reads out of range, or is there enough wiggle room to go that lean with out tripping a code? Also, do you have a recommendation for a replacement. Oem versus aftermarket? Thanks!!
Here's the thing with the O2 sensor, it's the only feedback the computer has on how close it is to correct fuel trims, and the sensor doesn't tell the computer what the actual A/F ratio is it just switches back and forth between about 0.2 and 1v when the mixture is at 14.7:1. When these sensors drift off spec but continue to switch the computer is none the wiser so it'll just continue doing it's thing like nothing is wrong, the sensor has to stop switching or the heater circuit has to burn out before a code will be set.
As for what brand sensor to use I'd suggest a brand name like Bosch or an OEM which is probably also a Bosch.
