I drove to the store today and a dash light that has a picture of a fuel pump and droplets of something came on. What does this mean( I do not have a manual)?
When you change fuel filters, there is a drain in the HFCM(horizontal fuel conditioning module). It is located on the inside frame rail under the drivers door.
It's the water in fuel light. On your fuel pump, as Justin indicated, there is a drain plug with either a 6mm? allen plug or a butterfly handle that needs to be removed to drain the water trap. You will need a catch pan.
So just open the plug and let everything drain out and close it back up? Does it need to be changed immediately or just when convenient? By that I mean can I drive it still for a little bit or should it be parked.
Thanks everyone for helping me with my first diesel
Oh Grasshopper, so much to learn on your first diesel. I'm sure many of the good folks here will give you all you need to know about keeping your truck happy but I will offer you this advice: Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. If you haven't yet changed your fuel and oil filters, do that right away. Lots of info in the tech folder. Do yourself a favor and read through it. Ask the good folks here for clarification when you need and the search feature on this forum is your friend as well
Take care of your truck and it will take care of you.
Ford parts service is closed today so I can't buy new filters. The oil was changed out 1500 miles ago so its fine for now. I can remove the water but I can't change fuel filter till next weekend as I don't get home til after dark during the week. If I don't change it now the truck will have another 80 miles on it and I'm not sure how that will effect things. Is there just one fuel filter( referring to the one located next to the water separator)?
Some local parts store carry the OEM fuel filters (2). One is in the HFCM and one is on top of the motor next to the oil filter housing.
You can drain to water from the plug without changing the filter.
There is 2 fuel filters. The main one in the hpfp on the rail under the driver side door and a second one on top of the engine( the smaller housing is your secondary fuel filter, the bigger one is your oil filter)... they both change out really easy and should take less then 15 min. You can do it at night with a flashlight
Well I drained all the water out but my drain bolt is badly eaten away from corrosion so I don't want to risk putting it back in and messing up threads. No other parts store near me carry Motorcraft parts expect for glow plugs. The drain is very simple to do and I'm kind embarrassed to have asked how now. I guess I was just a little overwhelmed having never done work on a diesel haha. The truck will have to be fixed tomorrow, making me drive my antique F100 everywhere.
Should I try and spray up inside the hole with carb cleaner? I have no idea how much gunk is up there but a few tiny prices of something like that came out. In between the light showing up and draining the water out I had to move the truck and the light turned off so i guess it just began to turn on and was kind of "in-between" the point of warning. The "water" was blueish clear.
