Online it says the filters are $75 at the dealer. To me that seems pretty high when I can get four time the aftermarket ones for $50. I've heard to only use Ford filters but has anyone had luck with others that are a little kinder to the wallet?
I ended up just getting them from the linked site. I'll buy the drain plug at Ford so I can drive the truck if need be. I wasn't even planning to change the filters out for a few hundred miles when I change oil so its good that I'm changing them out sooner now. I can bet they'd be pretty clean as the rest of the truck was maintained. The corroded drain plug probably didn't help the system I can assume. Most I'll put on it this week is about 50 miles.
Be prepared to see a mess in the fuel filter housing, mine was after I change to the updated drain plug. I plan on doing a full clean and rebuild in the spring on the pump assembly.
Should I try and spray up inside the hole with carb cleaner? I have no idea how much gunk is up there but a few tiny prices of something like that came out.
You can always try to spray, use the straw and aim in all different directions until the brown goo stops coming out. I had a plastic pan/bucket under to try to catch the stuff and I had a small pile.
If it come back again, then you'll have to decide if you remove the HFCM and open the housing to give a thorough cleaning.
I think most diesel additives contain an algae inhibitor which would be good.
Haven't had the WIF lite again - knock on wood.
Speaking of that, after cleaning out I can imagine I'll stir up and unstuck of few chunks that will remain inside so its probably good that I'm going to not immediately change fuel filters and get them dirty.
