I have a 89 f150,swb,4.9,5spd manual. Under the hood on the passenger side wheel apron there is a black electric fan. It has a hose coming from it going to a metal tube , that runs the length of the cylinder head under the intake manifold.
,there are smaller metal tubes coming off of it going into the head close to the fuel injectors. My haynes books does not have anything on it. What purpose does this fan have? Cooling of the head?..My dads 95 f150 4.9 does not have this on it. Any suggestions? Thanks for any information......Bamagrasshopper
I've never seen nor heard of this...could it be something a previous owner may have installed? that would be a prety good idea to cool down those heads.
My 89 F-150 4.9L has the same fan. It runs after I shut the motor off for 15-20 minutes. There should be a sticker on it somewhere saying this is normal for it to run for awhile after shutting off vehicle.

I have read that Ford had problems with fuel boiling in the injector lines because of the proximity of the hot exhaust manifold. The cure was to put a cooling fan in that cools the injectors. The back injector didn't need cooling as it is farther from the exhaust (or dosen't have exhaust on both sides). I believe all EFI 300 I6s have this setup. If I can remember/find where I saw that post I will cite the reference.

I thought this setup was only on the early EFI 300's. The only ones I've ever seen it on were on 2 different 88's. My dad's 96 with a 300 doesn't have it.
Ok after looking closer during the daytime the smaller tubes are not going into the clylinder head. They are pointing right at the fuel injectors. I jumpered the fan to see if it worked . It does and it blows air right on each fuel injector. I did see the sticker close to the fan. It reads that this vehicle is equiped with an auxillary engine compartment fan, it will run up to 15 minutes when the vehicle is off. I have never heard it run before, I have had this truck about 5 years.Just never paid it much attention until now. Does any one know what sensor is controlling the fan? What years were they are on these trucks?.Was it just on the 4.9? Why were they installed on them? Thanks for any information...Bamagrasshopper
Not sure but think this is on all EFI 300s. I believe it is on my '95, but have never heard it run. The writeup I saw was the Oct 86 Popular Mechanics, Technical Highlights. Even with a heat shield and an ultra-high fuel injection system, fuel at the injector tip would vaporize at 220 F which could affect hot re-starts. The fan system is intended to make sure the temperature never gets close to 220 F. When the fuel temperature rises to about 190 F and the engine is off, the fan will engage. The fan will run for up to 15 minutes.
Mantta: Why did you unhook the fan? Were you having problems with it or do you live in Alaska where you never need it?
Sorry, I've gotta slow down. Somehow I read your message too fast and missed what was going on. Well, glad you are not having any problems with it anyway.
Those fans are NOT on all the EFI 300's. My 90 doesnt have one, and it came with most of the options available for it. It does sound like a logical device though, wish i had one cause it gets HOT here in STL in the summer.
Wow, Im new to my Ford truck (88 f150), and was wondering what that thing was... the trouble with mine is that the fan motor is missing, theres just the wire wraped rod poking out of a fan housing... Should I find a new one and fix it? Seems to run fine, but we do get occasionaly hot days here in oregon...
My truck has another odity, theres a 1 1/2" tube comming from the generator housing into what lookes like a filter canister mounted up near the injector cooler fan..
whats that? Im guessing its someting to trap the ozone created in the generator, but like I said, thats a guess....
