We use a Sig .40 in the service, and I have never developed a like for its feel. When I had a semiauto, I went with the Walther. Now I just use a good old six shooter for my fun.
As for your Ex pick, the guys make a good argument for the Diesel, however, it all just boils down to the quality of the rig. Any car in bad shape/not taken care of will never live up to its potential diesel or gas.
Since your using it for towing and vacation I would get the 7.3. Higher resale, more options, being an 02 they come with the ability to plug and play 08 mirrors in plus better stock headlights. It will be more on initial cost and maintenance but the I think has more positives. Better mileage, more comfortable and more modification friendly. Do you have links or pictures of either rig?
The 7.3 is a friends of mine. He s been towing a 10k lb trailer with it since new. On his second trans and has slight rust on the doors. he upgraded the turbo and has rear air bags. Not as clean as the 01 which does not appear to be abused.
How much do you plan to drive it aside from your few towing trips per year? Some say the oil burners don't like to sit, but I'm the wrong guy to ask about that.
I have zero issues with power in my V10 towing a similar weight TT. That would include towing in the mountains of Montana and Wyoming.
You'l never recoup the cost difference until you sell it again. Seems like they do hold the value, but forget about seeing anything meaningful in reduced operating costs.
Kind of like what feels better a Glock or a Sig-Sauer?
Form follows function.
Glock,,, 30 and 30S AND I am a wheel-gun guy also, and I love my Walther P22 so I'm just all over the board,,, probably why I have more than one truck!!
For your needs and what you have described it will be used for...don't tell anybody I said this...Buy the XLT V10 gasser.
You can always upgrade to a diesel.
I think this is good advice, the gasser will be a better short haul around the town rig, that is able to take the long hauls. Also, it sounds like the 7.3 he is looking at has seen better days.
Either way, he is looking at getting and X so life is not bad, not bad at all.
I would buy the V-10 thats in better shape with less miles for 5 grand less. Then spend some of the money saved and regear that XLT to 4.30 or 4.56 with stock or near stock sized tires, go to 4.88 gears for 35" tires. Deeper gears really wake the V-10 up and vastly improve the towing experience. We pulled our 9500lb ToyHauler about 7500 miles a year and the difference between the stock 3.73 gears and the 4.88s is huge.
I choose the v10. It has brand new 305/70/16 on it. It's much cleaner than the 7.3 and I got it for 6k less than the 7.3. What kind of sway bar is recommended? Also how much to re gear?
I agree on the v10. With only 80k and 6 grand less it would be hard to pass up. The 7.3 IS a great motor and resale would be higher, but so is the buy-in and maintenance. I'd love to score me an 80k mile v10 to replace mine with 205k!

Congrats on making a choice and joining the X club! When you get a chance, post pics of your new V10, everyone here loves pics!
