C6 Thrust Washer Kits??
I've seen a few of these kits on eBay and am wondering if anyone has had any luck with them.
Not sure if it'll be useful to me because I'm ordering a master rebuild kit with soft and hard parts.
Can anyone decode this tag on my C6?
The tag reads:
PGD.............BE5..............B20
D9TP.............LA................058076
NumberDummy?
Every kit I see online doesn't list thrust washers as a part that the kit comes with.
The front pump thrust washer is selective, meaning you can buy varying thickness versions to ensure the input shaft endplay is correct. You should measure endplay before you take the trans apart with a dial indicator. I do not have my manual at work with me so do not have the end play specs with me.
Generally, the thrust washers do not wear out unless there is a metal/hard part failure in the trans, like a planet gear that fails and sends metal through the trans. I have never replaced a set in any C4 or C6 I have rebuilt.
If you did not measure end play when you took it apart, measure it when you reassemble and if it is OK, you are set. If it is out of spec, get the correct size front pump washer. Most trans rebuilders can help you get the right one. The replacement may be plastic. I have used both types, no problem.

I'll have to do some reading up on how to measure endplay of the output shaft to see what I have and if it's in spec or not.
I'm not sure what use a dial indicator would be for measuring endplay, but I guess that will come up when I read up on it.
Reps for the great info. Learned something new!
Here is a photo of endplay checking (not a C6 but the setup is the same).
My 78 Ford shop manual shows endplay can range from 0.008 - 0.042in. Ford offered three selective thrust washer sizes: 0.056-0.60, 0.073-0.077 and 0.088-0.092.
Measure the endplay. If it is out of spec, measure the thickness of the current selective thrust washer (the big one on the front pump). Then select a size that will bring it back into spec. If you are not sure how to do all that, or do not have the tools, at a minimum, rent/borrow a dial indicator, then take that measurement and your selective thrust washer to a good trans shop and have them measure yours, then get you the correct replacement.
Happy Rebuilding.
