460 Block heater install

What is the best location to install a block heater on a `92 4x4 w/460. I got one from Jegs, to be installed on Wednesday, and figured that most of you living up north have one installed. If there is a preferred location, would you please share it with me. Thanks.

Banksy in the way

I`ve got Banks headers and since I haven`t had a chance to get under there to have a look around, I don`t know if i can route the wire without getting melted on the exhaust. On my oilburner this was not an issue.

I have a 92 with a 5.0,pretty miniscule compared to your monster there but mine is down by the starter. not a good spot if you have to replace it someday.

sparks anyone?

The block heater on my diesel lasted for 22 years, so longevity is not so much my concern, as proper routing of the power cable without starting a mayor electrical fire.(120 volts arcing across the headers would make for a cool video though

7.3 just a quick side note (I also have the 460) what is your thoughts on the banks headers? I just have the cat-back bank kit… Any input would be great. A block heater would be awesome right about now.

Banks headers

The system was installed by the previous owner, and he said it made a huge difference in performance(he had a cab over camper that was designed for a dually) and in fuel mileage. The headers are huge diameter and beautifully made out of stainless steel. Super quiet too. The banks power-pack on this truck was the reason for me to even consider to go from a diesel to a gasser.
I know the turbo diesel guys are gonna smirk at this statement, but as far as performance goes my 7.3 was a slug, and I live in the mountains. On flat ground she could run 80mph all day long, but you throw an incline in there and better got your pyjamas out.So yes go for it, you wont regret it.

getting it done

Heading to my mechanic to get the thing installed. I`ll post an update tonight in case someone else is trying to do the same. Once you`ve had one on a truck/car you`ll love it too.

block heaters rock

Alright, it`s all done. There is a perfect spot for it right above the starter motor. We removed it to get easier access to the freeze plug, and it was a piece of cake. But before you buy your block heater element ask how long the power cord is, as mine (part #014728585 from Jegs high perf.) was a little on the short side. We just made it to the lowest grille inlet. Another two feet of cable would have been perfect. Anyhow, for anyone attempting the same project, allow about three hours, give or take(it took half an hour just to get that damn flloormat looking airdam thingy out of the way). Besides that, draining the coolant takes the longest, as we did not disconnect the lower radiator hose, but instead used the drain pet **** on the radiator itself. And the block drain of course.
Refilled with CHEVRON-Long Live anti freeze(good for 750 000 miles...Haha, hey you AMSOIL guys out there, maybe yours will work for a million miles or more{with some filters and so forth}JUST KIDDING!!! I read the AMSOIL thread yesterday?!?!?!?!?!?) There is no reason for cold start problems any more, and what do you need a heated steering wheel for if your heater vents blow warm air when you get in the truck. Total cost $220.00US. Have fun and stay warm.

Block Heater

I have the 460 and two block heaters.

Driver's side block heater.

If the temperature is more than 30 degrees outside, use only one heater. Otherwise, plug in both of them. It's very nice to have a truck that blows heat as soon as you start it. Notice the power cord (orange) has a protective cover for the first few inches allowing you to run it past the exhaust manifold.
