Hello ya`all. Has anybody here replaced the rubber grommet/bushing on center support of their drive line before. Truck is a`92 f250 4wd w/E4OD. Is it better to replace the bearing while in there also? How much play is acceptable? Thanks!
Haha, well I guess that did not come across to good. This part of the drive line gets no attention until you hear/feel strange sounds and/or vibration. Some times the bolts back out, some times the bearing goes bad, or as in my case the rubber grommet/bushing gets old(22years to be exact). So even if nobody replies, take a minute to inspect this part as it is not serviceable on the road( requires pressing on) and can seriously spoil your day. So put on some warm clothes and get under there.
i put one on my f150 and it was hell if I may say so. I was driving 65 mph to school 37 miles away(college) and the bearing seized and it tore everything apart. got home and almost condemned the truck from the damage.
I would assume that the bearing tried to tell you what was about to happen in advance. My two mounting bolts came loose one day, and it sounded terrifying. A bearing does not just suddenly seize up. That`s why you want to drive your truck every once in a while without the radio on, just to listen to how the truck is running. How much did you pay to have your drive shaft redone.
believe it ornot the driveshaft was fine. I did the bearing myself for 20 bucks. it took me a few hours. the worst of it was trying to bend back one of the center frame supports I think they are called. a large bar and a lil heat an its close enough to new that im not concerned. either way not a fun trip. you are right that it didn't just suddenly seize but I do know that it had enough friction against it to break all hell loose. bunch of banging and grinding. you would've thought someone was doing demolition work while you were driving.
