"99PSD F350 2WD CC SRW, how much play can there be in the carrier bearing. The bearing itself seems ok, but I can move the drive shaft around inside of the bearing support. I have been getting a vibration that I have not been able to pin point.
I'm not sure, but I think the max allowable play is measured in the thousandths of an inch. If the play is enough to see with the naked eye, it is probably too much.
Are you talking about play in the bearing, or the play on supporting rubber bracket?
I redid my differential last week and having drive-shaft disconnected I decided to replace the bearing because of crispy rubber as well. The bearing didn't have any play, but 12 years plus 200+k miles made the rubber very weak.
It was about $30 at NAPA. Measure yours going there, since they offer me 2 sizes.
Slapping some grease on the sliding shaft would be advised as well.

The bearing seems to be ok, but there is a fair amount of movement with the support around the bearing. Is the rubber support around the bearing a replaceable item?
