Big romps when starting this morning

I went out to move my truck into the sun this morning to melt the snow and it did not want to start. I let the glow plugs warm for about 30 seconds before trying to start. I started, romped for a few seconds and died. I repeated the process, then it romped for 5-10 seconds and started running. I had smoke out the tail pipe.

1. I was not plugged in
2. 18*
3. GPR led was on
4. New GPs installed this year when I installed my re-maned injectors (which may be acting up lately...need to hook the puter to the truck)

Ideas?

oh I am due for an oil change. I am running 15-40 right now, but didn't think this could be the cause since it is not really that cold in comparison to some.

I used to run Delo 400 15w-40 and would get the romps, sometimes as warm as the mid 60's F. I switched to 5w-40 and it has never happened again. I realize this is just masking some other issue, but it has worked for me. I have also heard that there are so many different PCM variations that some PSD's are just more susceptible to the romps than others.

I think it's pobably pretty normal on 15w40 in those temps. Let the glow plugs cycle a full minute next time it's that cold and see what happens. I used to run 15w40 and t those tmps, iwold often cycle twice (1 minute each) before starting.

Not sure what the temp threshold is, but gelled fuel? And 5-40 syn might help. I just found out about the fuel deal.

Since you have a glow plug LED, wait until they go out before you crank. Mine suffers from cold weather romps when my oil is near its end.

Longer on the glow plugs for sure. I cycle mine twice when it sits in the mountains for a few weeks. Fresh oil won't hurt either.

You're all good with your sticks. Longer GP time will definitely help, but the synth allows me to fudge on the GP time - and easily start below the recommended plug-in temperatures.

Same here, I was getting the romps at any temp below 40 degrees on dino 15w-40 oil. I switched to 5w-40 T6 synthetic oil a few winters ago and never had an issue since.

Help a guy out here.

How's does a longer GP cycle help?

I know for sure changing from a 15w-40 to a 5w-40 helps...I've done it. I'm currently running 10w-30 Rotella though.

So if the oil, in my experience, is the deciding factor...how does a longer GP cycle help?
