I am planning on restoring (modifying) my 77 F250 Ranger within the next couple years. I know I want to install dual exhaust on it, I already got headers for it. What would you guys recommend for pipe size and mufflers. I don't want to go too big on the tubing because it could cost me in low end, but I want people to know I am coming. Any recommendations?
Heh heh heh...nothing sounds better than my 48" thrush mufflers behind a built 460. I know the'd sound just as good behind a 351, as I've used them behind a 350 Chebby, too....
State Patrol is pretty friendly too.....maybe it's because I've never "whomped on it" in front of them....
I also have a Thrush Turbo on my stock single exhaust. It is quiet in the cab, and has a good tone on the outside; not too loud, not too quiet. _________
I wouldnt go over 2.5" for a dual setup, thats what I used. I also re-used the million year old glasspacks that dont actually muffle very much. If you got the windows down its very loud in the cab. If you roll em up its not to bad. H-pipe or X-pipe would probably also sound better, thats my next project. Including full length headers I got less than $175 on the whole dual exhaust with side exit infront of the rear tires. Doing it infront of the tires saved me pipe and hassle. I actually have no pipe at all. it goes headers -> 'S' extension -> glasspacks -> 90 degree elbows (one U shape cut in half) -> 12" long chromed tips. I didnt do any welding or anything either. Most of it is but joints that I used the stainless steel strap type band available from summit racing. Works pretty well but you have to clamp it down pretty good. I bet a decent cam would help out the sound too... the stock cam has only like a 180 or 190 degree duration at .05" (forget the exact numbers).
I've got 3" duals turned out behind the cab on my 79 F150. It has L&L headers and Flowtech Afterburners. They sound a little bit like a turbo muffler till you start gougin' on it and then they start to sound like glasspack, only not near as loud. I got the muffler's from Jeg's for about $35.00 a piece.
i had my exhaust ran with 2.5 all the way to the rear axle and then dumped with the flowmaster 40 series delta flows and with 16inch echo tips that are dumped at the end of it i wanted the echo tips to dump too because i have never seen anybody do it and it sound good to me ..at idle its got a good sound and then opening it up it get loud..but i like loud..but after installing carpet all the way thru my truck it got quieter..but you can still hear it ..the flows are not that cheap either i work for a local autoparts store and with my discount they were still $69.00 each just about two years now and have no rust and they sound just as they did when i bought them
i'm runnin dual 2 1/4 inch pipes with thrush glasspacks exiting the rear shotgun style. before the rebuild it sounded a'ight. kinda loud and louder when you opened it up. when i got the engine rebuilt i got a grumpy cam so now it sounds way better. kinda like a chopper. i think i'm gonna get flowmasters though they sound alot deeper.
2 1/2 inch pipes turned out behind the rear wheels with no mufflers and only baffled tips sounds great its not overly loud at idle but when you want to be heard you certainly can.
Steaksauce or mustard sounds good. Just kidding. My 460 has headers, 2 1/4" pipes that exit behind the rear tires(like stock) and 40 series Mustang Flowmasters. It sounds great!!
