Need some input fast....please

Good day folks,

My stepson is looking at a private sale 2001 Ex Limited 4x4 with the 5.4L. Unsure of the axles but I'll assume for now that they are either 4.10 or 4.30.

She has 248K on the clock with the claim of a new engine.

I need some solid advise from the experts so I can give my stepson an educated answer. Thanks again.

The asking price is $3800: here are the specs from Edmunds:

Optional Equipment $128 $169 $258

VCR Entertainment System $71 $93 $143
Heated Driver's Seat $11 $15 $22
Heated Exterior Mirrors $7 $10 $15
Remote CD Changer $20 $26 $39
Color Adjustment - Black $-10 $-12 $-15

i do have to say that ford excursions are very solid suvs... is this a 2 or 4wd excursion and has the private seller stated anything about doing any service as in suspension work or motor work... i know the 6.8 v10 can be ran for alot of miles but with some work done to them but im not to sure on the 5.4 excursions. please let me know if you have any other questions

If i am not mistaken the 5.4 liter engine was only put in a 2wd. The 4wd came with a v10. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

ok just noticed you stated new motor was it a new motor or a rebuilt motor.... if the guy doesnt have any paperwork of the motor swap i would have to call bs on his part. ive had several rebuilt motors installed at a local shop and have always kept recipts or something to prove when i sell the truck that these repairs have been done. did he possibly replace the transmission as well in the excursion during the motor swap ? if not i do have to say that there isnt to many miles left in that transmission if it has done alot of pulling in its time. ive been a ASE certified mechanic for over 11 years so just putting my 2 cents in and yes i do send my work to my friend at a local shop because since then i have gotten out of the mechanics industry about 4 years ago and became a full time welder

I don't believe the Limiteds came with a 5.4....if in fact it is a Limited and not a re-badged XLT.

Regardless....$3800 sounds good if it's in good mechanical condition....and if you can live with the 5.4 struggling to get the 8000 lb beast to move.

I believe you're right.

I would not want a 5.4 4X4....even if was just an engine swap....but that's me.

My stepson is going to look at it tomorrow. The CL add says a 4x4 Limited with the 5.4L. The owner could be an idiot, IDK.

He did call the owner tonight and he stated that the engine had been replaced by the original owner, I call BS as well.

It's still worth a look and thanks a ton for the replies thus far.

Tim, according to Cars.com it looks like the limited was able to be had with a 5.4L engine: 2001 Ford Excursion Reviews, Specs and Prices

Without receipts for the "new" engine install, I'm not sure I'd consider the Ex, unless of course he needs an inexpensive vehicle to move a lot of people.

Is he only looking because of the price, or because he's wanting an Excursion?

At my old shop, we had a 5.4L 4x4 roll through. cant remember if it was just a premium XLT with leather or a true Limited. cant remember either if it was a 00' or not, but compared to my v10 4x4, i can say i wouldnt chose a V8 to power my Ex unless the deal is similar to yours. Goodluck and remember no matter how slow it is, it will take the same time to try and stop it haha

I spoke with him in great detail about this very subject. It's in his price range. I made him very aware that it's about worn out, it will cost money and it's basically an F-250/350 that will need lots of special or heavier duty tools and or skills.

However, I think that if the truck is in great shape in and out, it's worth a rebuild as these trucks were built to last decades.

And all 5.4 bashing aside its a great motor and if he is not towing heavy a lot the 5.4 will be just fine powering the EX.

i would check out everything on that truck though... it seems a little fishy to me that the guy is saying its a limited with the 5.4.... i have talked with a few people from work and around town that have been ford mechanics and they stated they have never seen or heard of a limited with the 5.4 before but we also live in minnesota where everything is a v8, v10 or diesel for that matter... i would be very careful buying from a private seller. escpecially that he said the motor was rebuilt and it is a 4x4 for 3800 something sounds a little fishy just because i just bought my 03 limited with the v10 4x4 and it was 12,5k with 150k miles on it... go check it out with him if possible just to make sure it is the right choice and make sure to look at the intake manifold for any leaks and the heads you can normally see seeping out the sides or oil build up on the side of the block which is not normal
