Hi guys i have a 91 f150 300-6 with the E4OD and i notice a shake anywhere from 1200-1400 rpms in overdrive, above 1500 the shaking seems to stop and its very smooth, i can rule out tires because mine are pretty new and were just rotated with no uneven wear
any ideas what could this be ?
i am leaning towards tranny because mine has def seen better days and shifts sloppily sometimes
also on a side note i went to put my truck in park today and it didn't want to hold, the truck moved forward maybe 8 -ten inches and finally caught , could this be related?
Torque converter shudder is quite common on these trucks. My last '93 Lightning had a bad case of it. To test that theory lightly tap the brake pedal when the shaking/shuddering occurs, this will momentarily release the lock-up clutch. If the shuddering disappears then you know it's the dreaded shuddering problem.
Some profess using Lucas or other "anti-shudder" snake oil, I am not one of them. I resolved my shuddering issue with a complete transmission fluid flush and fill (18+ quarts).
thanks for the reply rla! i thought it could be the shudder too but i have tried tapping my brakes and it doesnt seem to help, i also had a shop do a tranny flush about a year ago although that may have helped for a week or so after its back to the shaking
If the shudder is still there after trying the brake tap test then I suspect it is a more complex problem. Tapping the brakes unlocks the converter, if the shudder is still there that means it's inside the transmission more than likely.
So not to try to hijack a thread but my e4od is doing the same. Not sure of RPMs as mine has no tack but it happens at a slow cruising speed. I was planning on getting a flush done at 100k miles anyways while I was getting a shift kit put in. If that doesn't fix it does that mean the torque converter is bad or is it just something that these transmissions do?
Also check your universal joints on your drive line for wear.Grab the drive line by hand,if there is any movement up and down than your joints need to be replaced.
Worn joints can cause bad vibrations at certain speeds.
Our Crown Vic police cars had torque converter shudder in a lot of them. Ford had us pour in a bottle of their limited slip additive and amazingly it cured the shudder. These were cars still under warranty. When my personal Interceptor got the shudder I poured a bottle in and it cured it right off. Try it, you have nothing to lose.Use the Ford stuff.

Limited slip additive. Well I'll be darn. Makes sense though. I'll add that to the oil cabinet also.

i have a 92 300/e40d and mine does it at lowish rpms too, i also did the brake test and it didnt change, i think it is the motor myself, it seems to have a rough spot in that rpm, i have concluded this becuase i had the same thing on a 300 with an m50d also at that rpms.
Does downshifting into third gear but maintaining the same speed cure it, or is the shaking still present?
If i shut OD off the shaking does go away, i have tried the lucas oil additive which does seem to help it shift smoother but i still have the shake, my u joints are fairly new but i will take a look at them as well
I also have wondered if it could be engine related but it seems more tranny related to me, i also notice that my tranny really does not like to shift out of overdrive like a good tranny should in normal driving conditions like slowing down for a car turning
Then the source of the issue lies somewhere between the cooling fan and the transmission output shaft (it's engine or transmission related). The fact that downshifting into third relieves the issue rules out the driveshaft, u-joints, wheel balance, etc.
