Gas tank

I know their has been several threads concerning the installation of a 1968-70 22 gallon Mustang gas tank in old Ford trucks. Unfortunately, all the threads I found referred to the installation in 56-58 Fords. Was wondering if anyone has the 22 gallon in a 48-50 F1. Was wondering if the dimensions of the tank were compatible with our my 49 frame dimensions. I thought Ben had said he used the same tank in his 49 but couldn't find his post to be sure. Anyone with this install, I would appreciate your assistance and comments on the install. Thanks in advance.

Hey Dferrell,
How's it going up there - you guys freezing yet?

We have the 1970 Ford Mustang 22 gallon tank installed in our '50. It's really nice to have the almost 40% increase in range vs. the in cab stock tank. We bought our's new from Rockauto for around $120 plus another $60 for the sending unit. We used the Jniolin gas tank tutorial as our guide during installation. It fits between the rails fine though there is some massaging needed to get it in there.

o You have to move one cross member to free up space.

o You have to shave a little off the frame rail to squeeze it in. 1/4 of an inch or so shaved off the rail.

Some Gas Tank Thoughts:
o Venting - You need to think through how you want to vent your tank.
We initially used a vented gas cap & an additional rollover vent. My wife didn't like the "stinky truck smell in the garage" so we added a charcoal canister to the rollover vent & went with a closed gas cap - No more smell.

o Gas Gauge & Sending Unit - You have to use the '70 sending unit to get the fuel line pickup into the tank. The challenge is that sending unit works on 11 ohms to 70 ohms or so while our modern Autometer gauge is 0 ohms to 200 ohms. We clipped off the '70 sending unit in the tank & welded on a universal sending unit (0hms to 200ohms) to match our gauge. I'm told that Speedway sells a neat little interface that matches the ohms to gauge.

Good luck over there. Let me know if you have any questions. Look up John niolin's guide it's very detailed. Probably a two weekend project if you go slow.

fuel tank

I am putting it in my 49 Like they said I had to remove the rear cross member and cut about 1/4" off both sides of the frame rail. If I can figure out how to post pics I will post the work I did to replace the cross member and hoe the tank looks installed. I got my tank from National Parts Dist for $161.28 including the sending unit and shipping charges on 8/9/2013
