Gas Tank Sending Unit Hatch

I was talking to a friend of mine with an old thunderbird, and he said that he had a hatch in his trunk that opened up right to the top of the gas tank, making it possible to change the sending unit without dropping the tank.

Has anyone done this with their truck? It seems like it would be easy enough to cut a 8" square piece of the bed right above the tank and put it on hinges.

Let me know what yall think.

I wouldnt cut my truck for something that you have to fix maybe 1 or 2 times in your life. Dropping the tank really isnt that bad if you run it almost out of gas first.
