Thinking of new glow plugs soon, and curious if I should consider new vc gaskets and connector. It would add 120 bucks to the project, not having any issues that I know of, and .50cent mod done.
Truck has 224k now.
Thanks.
Might be good to replace just the harnesses. There have been recent posts stating the 50 cent mod did not hold up. I bought the redesigned harnesses 4 years ago now and they are holding up well. I agree the gasket should be good if no burnt pins.
Come to think of it, isnt there a redesigned harness/gasket combo that eliminates the connection - it's all one assembly? I dont think I'd go that far unless the gasket was bad/burned.
The UVCH connector is the part that fails unless the gasket part of the connector is broken. I would replace the harness instead. the gasket is pretty resilient and holds up really good. I would still be on the originals but I broke the connector myself trying to fiddle around with it. I replaced my harnesses about 3 yrs ago and haven't looked back.
While you are in there, re-torque the injector hold downs and rockers.
And after connecting the wiring back to the new glow plugs, be sure that the wires are routed so they don't touch any moving parts or you could be digging back in there again before long.
I will have to research again what is what. I was thinking the connector was part of the gasket, since it is a bit expensive. Been a while since I took it all apart.
Thanks.
Just reread your posts, got it.
As long as you're willing to buy new parts (which you seem to be) you might as well pick up some spares. The only thing keeping those injector control wires and glow plugs leads from giving your rockers a big ol' hug is a couple of tiny zip ties. And those things have a tendency to get a little fragile over the years. Never know when one might break.

There are different parts to the connectors. The harness has the part that fails, the gasket, if your careful, can be good to go...I didn't take care on one of them. (oops). And the outside part of the connection through the valve cover usually is good as well.

Thanks, I see where I was confused. Like I said, it's been a while, and I have slept since then. lol. I am willing if I have to, but don't want to if I don't. The under cover harness looks like a good idea. I can see things getting brittle under there.
You may have already heard this, but just in case you didn't, don't use Autolite glow plugs. Motorcraft is the way to go.
Oh yeah, and RR has great prices. This is just something I think worth taking care of on my terms, not the trucks. Besides, it's getting freaking cold here. My Texas truck is confused as heck.

Well new glow plugs and a blankie and she will feel all better.
