Wow, BossGasser, this is very interesting information that you speak of. Once i get my new truck (next week) I plan on putting it on the highway from Virginia to South Florida and back within 7-10 days. Round trip that's about 1800 miles. Do i need to get an oil change once i get down to Florida? I'm seeing a lot of differing views about when to get that first oil change. Any response is greatly appreciated.
I think the consensus here is that people need to do what brings them some peace.
Anyone remember the old plastic Wankel model engine kits? These new engines aren't that rough around the edges but I'm pretty certain that there is bound to to be some metal in the original oil.
Another thing to consider which really supports Tom's post, we all reference the owners guide like it's a bible of sorts and no where in the owners guide does it state to dump the factory fill any earlier than we would any other change. With all this being said, i dumped mine at 2500 miles because it made me feel better.
Another thing I try to do is break in the vehicle without the A/C. I live in Florida and have always heard excessive heat is also an issue on break-in. Not sure how accurate that is but I heard it long ago and have been doing it since.
As far as your trip to Florida, stop by a Ford dealer and get it changed. Most have fast lanes now for oil changes, etc..
I am changing mine at 500 because I got a free oil change and I will be up at the dealer where I purchased (60miles away) getting my Line-X installed. Doesn't make sense for me to drive 2 hours at a later date. If I didn't have the freebie, I probably would have waited until 1000.
Has anyone ever put a magnet into their used break-in oil? I've heard there will be metal contaminants, but I have never third it.
Usually the drain plug has a magnet on it.
I wouldnt worry about running the ac, these engines can handle it. Ive never had a issue with my personal vehicles or my company vehicles. They dont do a early oil change on the company vehicles just a 5000 mile change intervals and they get driven without any break in concern. Most of these usually gets traded after 175,000, some are gas some are diesels. All the ones Ive come across recently still run great, with the exception of one klunking chevy.
Like said earlier... if it brings you peace, change it.
