I had my first oil change at 2500 miles and the service advisor looked at me like I had two heads. I've settled into a 6K-7K dump cycle since then.

Yep you are right...but the dealer claims that they use a "break in oil" at the start.

Can anyone confirm, for sure, if a break-in oil is used? One would think, that if a break-in oil is used there would be some mention of this in the manual, and require a change at an interval less than OLM for factory fill dump.

I was told by the dealer that they no longer use any break-in oils.

Rob, this was not to call you out (as I'm not sure if this was sarcasm about the dealer not knowing that they are talking about...)

Robb I agree there is no such thing as break in oil...however the service writer after me telling him I wanted my initial oil change to be done at 450 miles...looked at me and said that. I just looked at him and said ok....please change the oil.

I just took delivery and was thinking about getting the oil changed at 500 miles. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this way.

I've only had it for two days, but boy, does the transmission fight you to keep the RPMs low! I'm not ******* it but I have needed to use the manual mode to get it above 2K RPM. I have been trying to vary the speed as much as possible during the break in period.

My oil sample from my 7,504 mile change was sent off today. If it looks as good as my factory fill did after 9,954 miles on my Mustang you may want to reconsider. I'll post the results when I get them.

Are you saying it would be a bad thing, or just unnecessary?

It's certainly not a bad thing, the idea of a special break-in oil is a myth. My UOA from my Mustang showed that the oil was still capable of doing its job after nearly 10,000 miles, and after that I've never been a fan of dumping good oil.

But it certainly won't hurt anything, and if it would make you feel better knock yourself out.

That can be true and I agree that there is no need to change oil every 2 or 3 or maybe even 5 thousand miles anymore.
HOWEVER, the parts of a new engine will wear together or wear in or break in - call it what you want.
There will be metal worn away from moving parts as they slide against each other.
IMO, an oil change at 500 or 1000 miles is a very good thing to do.

I do what I do.
Don't do it if you don't want to.
Try this:
Drive a new truck for 2 thousand miles. Pull the rear dif cover. Use paper towels to wipe out the entire housing.
Some people say that you never have to change the dif lube.
I ask you this: Would you drive 165,000 miles with that sparkly fluid rolling around in the rear end of the truck you depend on?

Agreed, Diffs don't have a filter that I'm aware of. There are also service intervals for them specified in the manual

Wow, BossGasser, this is very interesting information that you speak of. Once i get my new truck (next week) I plan on putting it on the highway from Virginia to South Florida and back within 7-10 days. Round trip that's about 1800 miles. Do i need to get an oil change once i get down to Florida? I'm seeing a lot of differing views about when to get that first oil change. Any response is greatly appreciated.
