HOW HEAVY IS THE TRAILER? MILEAGE SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT FOR MAYBE 10 TO 12k. MINE WEIGHS 14k AND I GET JUST A BIT LESS, SAY 10.5 AT 60 MPH on slightly hilly roads.
Late March I pulled my 36' Montana 5th wheel from Raymond NH to Mobile County Al a total of 1660 very hilly miles including 15 miles of the hilliest I've ever seen just south of Gettysburg. It was so bad on a 20 mph road it shifted to low and broke the tires loose on a couple of damp spots. That really rates up there on the pucker factor. The trailer weighs 13000 or so and I still managed 10.5 pulling 60-65.
Well I am only pulling a 27 foot with a slideout, weight is in the 7,800 pound range for trailer. I was pulling in the hill country just west of San Antonio and had no problems pulling, but was interested in trying to improve my mileage without to many significant mods. I will attempt to modify my driving habits first to improve the mileage.
I found that the trucks can get anywhere from 9 - 11 mpg when towing heavy loads and from 14 - 18 when empty with no significant modifications to the vehicles.
I pull a 14,000lb 5er and have found that I get 9-12 mpg towing depending on hills, mtns or flat hwy. I get 15-18 not towing, again depending on hills, mtns or flat hwy driving. Last fall I towed the 5er from Northern Calif to the mid west, then southwest, then up to Oregon. 7000 miles altogether. Avaraged 11.1 for the whole trip. I can live with that!
