I have a '52 F3 with 4 on the floor. 1st Gear is the "Granny Gear". Was there a 3 or 4 speed tranny (on the floor) made without the Granny Gear?
I must "double clutch" to shift. Was this particular to this type tranny?
Thanks,
Welcome to FTE!
This 4 speed transmission is known as a spur gear tranny and is commonly called a crash box.
Ford also offered a Synchro Silent in the F4 - F6 transmission which did not require double clutching and used helical gears. I know 1st gear was also a granny on that transmission (6.4:1).
Is your reverse gear to the right and forward or to the right and back?
Ford also offered an optional 3 speed Heavy Duty center shift tranny in the 52 F3. This tranny had the helical 2nd & 3rd gears.

Reverse is to the right and back. Does the s speed HD have synchro mesh and is it on the floor? Can it be mated to a 215 OHV in line 6?
Yes, the 215 engine can be mated to the 3HD transmission, same as your spur gear 4 speed. I bought a 3HD and 215 not long ago from one of our members. Your greatest challenge will be finding the 3HD. I got lucky and had mentioned to the member to keep me in mind if he ever wanted to sell his. To his strong credit he did give me first shot at buying it. The 3HD is synchro on second and third only. Stu
Just to clarify, 3 speed trannys don't have the granny low gear. Only the 4 speeds. And, being synchronized, you don't have to double clutch the 3 speed, either. Unless you're hauling heavy loads and need a really low 1st gear, the HD3 is the way to go.
I'm aging knowledge. Thank you both.
With my new found smarts, seems I have more questions!
Are all 3 speeds HD3s? And HD3s, if I understand correctly, have synchro in 2nd and 3rd, but still have to come to a complete stop to go in to 1st?
The HD 3 will be hard to find, but is a direct replacement for the 4 speed crash box I have now.
So, is there another power plant, tranny combo I can drop in without modification of mounts, etc? 223?
Thanks,
There's the light duty 3 speed used in half tons, but it won't work with your tranny cross member. I don't see anything to gain by changing engines. Maybe we should hear from guys who have experience with T5 swaps and T98 swaps. These will be somewhat more involved swaps, but they are more available trannies than are the 3HD. Stu
I have actually seen a light duty 3 in a pre-war 3/4 ton Ford pickup. It had a tall rear bearing retainer and looked like it would bolt into a later truck. Very rare, but something to keep in mind.
