The real skill I'm told is shifting without the clutch except when starting from a stop. Done by placing mild pressure on the shift lever and allowing it to drop into next gear on its own when RPMs match. Modern traffic might limit use of this technique. Stu
I have double clutching down for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. However, sometimes (maybe more often than not) , when I come to a complete stop, I can't get into first without several tries. Am I doing something wrong here, or do I have a problem with the tranny?

It's actually kinda fun once you get the hang of it. You'll be double clutching without thinking about it. Just have to get the rpms right and use a soft touch. You'll feel it when it's right to shift.
And with all that said, I still have trouble downshifting...

If you can't get it into 1st at a dead stop, something is amiss. But I rarely use 1st gear, since 2nd is perfect for starting out. I only use 1st to idle up the driveway into the garage. And if I need to pull stumps!
I used to shift various cars without the clutch, lining up speed and RPMs. Eventually I learned its hard on the throw out bearing and leads to early failure.
