I am not a big fan of using the hitch to tow someone out. If the retaining pin breaks, that huge hook becomes a nasty projectile. I understand why people do it, but especially when you let there be slack in the strap and then get a run and ****** it like they did in the video- It's a lot of stress on that hitch pin. Hummers stuck in mud aren't light I can't imagine the numbers.

That all being said, that was cool. That douche in the Hummer should be thankful for his fellow man.

You will not break the hitch pin.

In my experience hitches fail first, better hitch and the bolts rip through the frame, really good hitch and reinforced frame and the drawbar bends or breaks. You will hardly ever have a straight enough pull to put the full load on the the pin. If you did it takes something like 40k pounds to shear a grade 5 5/8 pin in double shear.

In that vid I would be way more afraid of the cheap chi-com cast hook.

Too much weight for the winch? Maybe he thought it would be over the rating?

All he would have done was pull the truck towards the hummer, the winch wouldn't have stood a chance. They would both have been better off to have a truck like mine or a buddy like me with a truck like mine to do the dirty work

x2 on not breaking the pin, it will be the last thing to go.

what this guy would benefit from is a longer strap so he can get to dry ground and traction, or a couple thousand pounds of weight in the bed. but he got it out like this so good deal!

So you guys are saying a 7500lb truck pulling on a 8,000lb truck and getting a running start can't/won't create 40,000lbs of force? Hmmm....

Either way, if that Chicom hook breaks or the hitch pulls off, or whatever, that could be a dangerous situation the way he set it up. I am not a fan.

Roger, I'm not much one for videos. Even fast forwarded that one several times to get to the "good stuff." But ultimately...man, that was an awesome video.

I must say, I was a bit concerned that the snapper-head stayed inside the Hummer cab. If that thing would have rolled over and submerged him, I'm sure he would have been too disoriented to get himself out before drowning. Was it deep? Well, deep enough to drown.

not trying to be a dick, but what do you armchair recovery experts recommend the driver use on the rear of his super duty to connect the strap to? its not like we have factory to hooks in the back. also to my understanding it is not recommended to pull heavy loads from the front tow hooks in reverse as the ring and pinion gears are not designed for that kind of load.

now me personally i see no problems with this recovery. no excessive "snatching" or slack is seen. no crazy running starts or wheel spin. the superduty driver is not using his towing hitch ball to connect the strap too (seen that done in person alot) the hummer driver is using a front tow hook instead of looping the strap around the steering tie rods ( seen that done in person too) and also i have seen these "monster hooks" in person they do not seem to be a joke there a chunk of steel. and last but not least, i have pulled many stuck full size trucks with trailers hooked up buried to there axles in sand (sand duner) out using my 20' recovery strap stuck in my 2" receiver with the pin through the sewed loop on the strap with no ill affect, i have also seen everyone, there brother, there mother, there sister, hell even the dog use the rear 2" hitch on there trucks with a recovery strap to unstuck vehicles.

Also that hummer was nowhere near rolling over in that mud hole. the superduty was pulling strait or a little to the passenger side, which would be pulling the hummer away from the the point of rolling over. also when doing a "snatching" recovery like that you need the stuck vehicle to apply some forward traction so as its being "snatched" forward it has the chance to gain ANY traction it will help the superduty pull the stuck hummer out.

none the less, good stuck, and good recovery. we all do dumb things when were young, bet the hummer driver wont do that again.
