Well you can start simple for example new plugs, wires, cap, rotor fuel filter air filter basic tune up stuff and then start fine tuning it play with timing and jetting what year is it does it have the eletronic feed back carb and dizzy?? you could remove the smog pump if its still in place little but less drag.need more Iinfo on your motor
I'm not sure, I'd think it does, I'll be setting the timing today as well, I know it's a little to close to the top. I can load it up with fuel and make it back fire also it runs backwards occasionally when I shut it down. It's doggy where it should have low end torque too, takes some feathering of the throttle to get it to go and evens out when the R's are up.
Just make sure it has a vacuum line hook-up to the dist. If there is no place to hook one up, and a lot of other stuff is plugged off, you definitely have a road to more fuel mileage but it will require a little work and some parts.
Short-shift it & let the torque work. Keep it under 3-grand down the road
Definitely, it isn't meant for high speed work. Its an industrial engine. I never run mine above 2500. Its a heavy inline, it can lug a 20 ft trailer filled with lawnmowers up a pretty steep hill in 3rd at 1000.

Yeh, the 300 is a workhorse, for sure ....... I've pulled a loaded 4-horse trailer with a DR350 on the bumper rack (sure glad I had air shocks on the rear!) up a 3% 8 mile pull; starting at 6,000 ft. and ending at 8,800 with 'Old Blu' and the orange Crate ('78 E150). Both have the 3-speed w/overdrive tranny and the 300. I believe that this engine with 3:73 axle and 235-15 tires and a NV-4500 transmission would be a puller that would put a lot of today's 'supertrucks' to shame. Judging from my experience over the years with all of the 'Big Three' American brands I believe that the 300 is the BEST gas TRUCK engine ever made - bar none!

Without a doubt, the 300 is the best Gasoline fired Truck engine around.
In my opinion, the only engine better suited for use in a truck, is the Cummins 5.9L I6 Diesel. Sadly, it was mated with what I consider to be an inferior chassis.....
I want to replace my 4.9L/300 I6 with a 5.9L I6 Cummins. NV4500 would be my 1st choice for a trans, but I wouldn't turn down the NV5500.......

Amen. I met a guy who had an F250 with the T-18 and 300 6 with 479,000 miles on it on its second tranny. He hadn't touched the engine except for a broken rocker arm, which he said was his fault(installed incorrectly).

...........the NV5500.......
How is the Dodge chassis inferior?
NV5500? I assume you meant NV5600 (6-speed, cast iron case, herky single-disc clutch) which was replaced in 2005 1/2 by the wimpy G56 (aluminum case with 'dual-mass clutch' - Daimler crap)
