Question Problem with hot start

89 Ford f250 7.5l starts up like a champ the first time of the day and as I run it from place to place it gets increasingly harder to start. Could this be a timing issue? I've heard that a high torque mini starter fixes this but I dont want to spend that kind of money without the people in the know telling me that's the issue. If ya'll think that is the case, which mini starter do you recommend and know will fit on this truck. I'm still learning the ins and outs of this beast as my father left it to me recently. I love this truck because it was his and determined to keep it running nicely. Thank you all for your time and help.

Harder to start as the battery seems weak? I'm inclined to think its a coil/ignition problem. Have seem them do well when cold but when Heat-soaked from engine bay, they fail. Been there, done that. Try heating the coil up with hairdryer when its been sitting for several hours and when you know it would start. Then after heating it up, try to start it. If its hard to start there's your problem.

Could be failing TFI/ICM module, but that's either a Start/No-Start condition.

About to try the hair dryer, is there another way to test that component. Also, would an msd ignition coil fix this or what part and number would you suggest that would be the best direct bolt on.

I no longer use MSD coils. I have 2 that failed, one before warranty ran out and another that did shortly there after. I put the 20 year old coil on and back running. Others here use MSD with luck. Unless your running a high end ignition, I dont see why OEM can't do the job.

Hope its just this easy and its the coil for you.

Your asking about a high torque starter suggests the problem is that it turns over very slowly during startup maybe even tad choppy crank|stop|crank|stop|crank as the main issue?

If so if it turns over slowly, weak crank but starts when up to full running temp might be nothing more than a heat soaked starter, starter drawing to many amps when its hot. If so a new stock starter would correct the problem.

If the starter is pretty old maybe even the original? chances are its probably had it, might be a faulty connection mixed in too.

If it turns over fine but is hard starting when hot, engine cranks fast and for several seconds before catching and or even fails multipliable attempts before it does catch but fires right up when cold? then that'd be different many things can cause that, fuel related comes to mind right off the bat but yea might also be ignition related......combination of both ........or even all three.

Danr1, good point in your above statement. It's been sometime since encountering a heat-soaked starter, and that is a very good direction as well.
