Is a programmer realy woth it?

I have an F250 crew cab 4x4 with the 6.2 L engine. I have a cold air kit and a cat back exhaust. My MPG is usually around 12 on average and 15 for highway driving. Is a programmer worth it for performance, MPG or towing programs?

quick answer - No... it wasn't worth it for ME - imho

you will probably never recoup the cost from mpg increases alone...

you can get the same mpg with better performance (typically in the 10% range for gassers)

much different from the deezle world

If you're buying it for the mpg's, forget it (unless you get the 87 economy tune, which I haven't bother trying yet).

If you're buying it for added hp and the phenomenal improvements to the trans, then yes, it's absolutely worth it.

If you're anywhere near me, pm me and I'll gladly let you take the land yacht for a spin w/ the 93 performance tune.

I agree with Matt. If you want one for fun or added towing power I highly recommend one. For MPG not at all.

Does the tow settings make a difference? (Not in mpg)

How bad does the performance tune hurt mpg?

Make a difference in what manner? The shifts are better and you get more hp. The performance and the tow tunes are considered the same (there isn't a performance AND a tow tune, just one tune).

I think I lost 1-2 mpg's going to the 93 tune. I'm not easy on throttle and there aren't too many flat roads in Pittsburgh to milk any good mpg's out of a truck like this.

I use the 87 economy tune and it defiantly makes the truck more drivable, Ford won’t let you go to full throttle until 4300 rpm, Mike took that out and that alone is worth it. If you keep your foot out of it you just might save some gas.
Mike did a great job on the 87 performance tune; I use it when I tow and if I had a stick trans, right where Mike has the shifts is exactly where I would shift. Plus the performance is very noticeable.

I lost 1 MPG due to the tune. I lost another MPG due to the way I enjoy the tune. I only run the 87 tow/perf tune. No reason really. I have the 93 tune but haven't even tried it yet. I also have the 87 economy tune which I haven't tried either.

I also wanted to mention the transmission benefits. When towing my trailer or "hauling the mail" the truck shifts perfectly. When leisurely driving sometimes I find weird spots in the shift pattern. Nothing bad though.
