First of all although I am married and have twin daughters, living with these three women has not made me completely nuts. At least not yet. I consider myself a pretty normal guy, handy and pretty tech/mechanically savvy.
What you are about to read is true. 100% true...
I've had my 2001 7.3l for some time. I just hit 200k on her. She looks good and runs better. Black on black with 2007 HD front end and 2008 rear. She's had some work done to her body, but mechanically, she's stock.
I live in Miami, Florida; a pretty normal place for the most part (except for the politicians) But there are no military installations, bunkers, giant antennas, etc. around. Here is the situation.
When I drive my truck by certain parts of town, I-95 near 2nd avenue exit for example, my truck starts to shimmy and shake like it's running out of fuel. The rpms buck like a wild bronco and the truck tries to stall out. Luckily I'm doing around 50-70mph on I-95 so the truck never gets a chance to shut off. This happens to me in certain areas of town and I can replicate the error 100% of the time.
At first I thought it was low fuel and the truck was having trouble getting it, but I tried with a full tank and got the same issues. I thought maybe it was the incline of the highway at that particular point, but I ran my truck up and down other parts of the highway with equal or even more incline and nothing.
Although you might say "well, at least she doesn't shut down on you" as a remedy/solution - I counter with what happened to me today and prompted me to write. There was traffic today on I-95 and it was at a standstill. When I got to THE spot. The truck RPMs went to 0 and I could not turn her back on. I had to be towed off the highway where, you you guessed it - she started right up.
It almost feels as if there is some sort of radio interference or microwave interference or heebee jeebee's - not sure what to think. And I've identified 3 places where this happens.
There's a new navy blue one available too - I keep one of those in the glove box, but have 3 of the black ones on the shelf. Sometimes changing it out will help you pass a CCT (cylinder contribution test) too...and a smoother idle.
There's a good chance you may have an aftermarket non-Ford, ICP sensor. I have one on my 7.3 Excursion and once I get to certain parts of downtown Houston, the truck bucks, kicks, stalls, and won't run right till I'm clear of the area with RF interference.

I can vouch for Toreador_Diesel. He knows his 7.3L's.
