Does anyone know what the cc's on a 400 head is supposed to be? I came up with 84 when I checked them myself. First time I have done that and want to make sure I did it right. I heard it was supposed to be around 74. Also wondering how much can be shaved off the heads to help that situation?
. Did you put a flat plate across the combustion chamber when checking ccs? or just pour oil in an open chamber?
. X 2... I think they're supposed to about 79cc, but can vary, since it's a casting... the open chamber design actually aids breathing... as do the large stock factory valve sizes... (but I'd replace the factory welded 2-piece valves with aftermarket S.S. 1-piece ones when upping power/RPMs)
. X 2 again... The TMI modified KB hypereutectic '351' pistons solve a lot of the Ford 400's problems without having to cut the heads, rods, crank, or block(except overboring)...!!!! Just add a suitable cam... Port the obstructions from the head ports, if any... Port match intake manifold ports to head ports... Ditto for exhaust ports/manifolds/headers...
I used a piece of plexiglass. I drilled a hole in the plexiglass, put a thin layer of grease on the head for a seal. I used a 100cc syringe and put alcohol in the chamber through the hole in the plexiglass. I actually have a 351m that I want to build and try to get around 400hp. Going to use a 400 crank and heads. Of course different pistons, connecting rods, cam and so on. Would I be better off using 351c heads? And if so, 2v or 4v?

351M heads are the same as 400 heads. Rods are the same.
I think you can get 400hp out of the stock heads with the right compression and cam, headers, intake carb etc.
. 351M/400 heads are basically a variety of 351C 2V heads... the earliest 400 heads made in 1970-1971 had better ports... after that the 351/400 heads usually had air injection bosses blocking the exhaust ports and slightly smaller ports, but should still do about 400 HP with the A.I.R. bosses and any other mistakes removed... 351C 4V heads have too big ports and poor shapes that create flow-blocking turbulence... check the other #335 engine threads here for more info...
