All 4 of my cats are plugged up on my 01 F150 4.6 supercrew. My plan is to remove the front pre-cats and install two new Magnaflow cats with o2 bungs. My truck has two O2 sensors in the pipe right after the manifold and then two more in the second cats not in the pipe. The problem I am having is trying to find a pipe that will replace the weird bend in the front cats. I was thinking of using a flex pipe from the manifolds to the second cats and then strait out to the muffler. Will these work? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-652514/overview/
The front pre-cats are like a 45 degree angle in and then a 90 degree angle out so a standard strait pipe from the auto parts store wont work.
You do need help.
Don't do what your purposing.
Replace both sides with after market assemblies and eliminate all the hassle you will have trying to rig some foreign arrangement that likely will result in codes..
If you need inspection it won't pass.
Good luck.
How did all 4 cats get plugged in the first place?
Has the cause been repaired?
I agree with bluegrass, rigging up an
exhaust system is time consuming and rarely ends well
Good luck keep us posted
One one my second cats is plugged and the others have loose material moving around inside so its not far from being a problem. Im not spending 600+ for cheapo aftermarket replacements so I decided to make my own stainless steel magnaflow set up.
I don't need inspection and don't even really need cats on the truck at all. I don't like not running any cats thats why I am replacing the 4 with two Magnaflows because I don't see the need for the precats. Most people Ive seen on here that have my set-up do the same thing because it doesn't throw codes. If I removed the second two cats then I would get a CEL and the truck might not run correctly. The first set of O2 sensors are in the pipe after the manifold and I am not touching them. The second set are in the second cats and I am just removing them and installing them into the new magnaflows. I know everything will fit and weld in without issue other than the flex pipes. Thats where I am running into isuues, Replacing the weird pre-cats that have weird angles. I can't just replace them with pipe unless it is a custom bend thats why i am using the flew pipe. Everything is on order along with a nut splitter to break the nuts off the manifold studs. I will post my progress and results as I go for future reference to anyone who wants to have a better than stock replacement set-up for under $300.
What experience have you that tells you aftermarket is that cheap?
Better tell some of the big name exhaust suppliers that.
I have one side from a well known supplier that has not given any problem.
You must understand that after market units are not meant to last the same length of time as an OEM because the truck now has a more limited life span than from new.
.
It's a lot like people come here and after the motor has high mileage and worn want to put expensive oil in thinking it has some magic advantage.
.
For example the rear OEM cats are almost twice the size of aftermarket cats for the normal usual life of the truck.
Replacements at a truck age of 100k miles or more is not cost effective at the same size when you consider OEM cats both sides are nearly $2500.
Makes $600 look pretty good for what life the truck has left..
Mine is at 202,000 miles and expect to be running well into 275k+
Your cats were likely abused in some manner from gross cylinder misfires that melted them or from physical abuse.
I'm only trying to offer you another perspective and info from experience and not debating you on you position.
I wish you luck with the endeavor.
I am saying that Magnaflow STAINLESS STEEL is a better option than some company Ive never heard of. I don't want to spend $300 a side for the replacement that is going to rust in 6 months. I am making a custom set-up the way I want it for half the price with better quality parts. Im sure the replacement pipes are just fine for the life of the truck but why not buy better parts? I can weld them myself and also get rid of the pre-cats which are 100% useless to me. I am replacing everything from the manifolds to the tail pipe(ordered a magnaflow muffler also) for around $300.
Really suggest not using flex pipe
It is an inferior repair that are very prone to leaking
especially right under the cab where exhaust leaks can be fatal
Ok thats what I was originally asking. I wanted more info on flex piping because I have never used it. I will look into using a custom piece of pipe instead. Thanks
