You can get replacements.
I had just changed the one on the housing I sent to some guy in Florida.

Mine was held with a rivet.
Let me see if I can find a link to one on sale now.

Standard Motor Products has a whole series of Vacuum Actuators, listed as VA-10 through VA-20.
I think these #'s relate to the amount of vacuum needed to move them.
Or the length of the hook.

BWD and Delco also make them...

They are all over Ebay, and available through your local auto parts store.

The most likely culprit for the heater/defroster situation is the vacuum-selector-switch located immediately behind the A/C-heat-defrost control levers.

When they go bad they default to DEFROST.

I figure you will find yours all melted and dis-figured, especially since you were also having blower-motor resistor issues.

If you regularly use the blower on any setting other that HIGH, a lot of resistance (read HEAT) goes through the fan-speed switch that is directly connected to the vacuum-selector-switch, thus melting the fan switch and vacuum-selector-switch.

My truck was about 18-months old when I got it; the previous owner always kept the blower on LOW and the vacuum-selector-switch had already failed when I got the truck; regardless of switch position, the blower only moved the air through the defrost vents.

Within days of me getting the truck, I installed a new vacuum-selector-switch and it is still working perfectly today; I seldom use any blower setting other than HIGH and I also have a pair of toggle-switch controlled SPDT relays at the blower-motor that, when energized, take the entire electrical load away from the factory blower-speed switch; thus, my fan-speed switch and vacuum-selector-switch do not contend with the damaging heat.

Good info, I will check that. I assume the heater controls pop out with a few screws, much like the radio? Should I get a junkyard vacuum selector switch or are these available at parts stores?

They should be available new.

The chances of removing even a working one from a junkyard truck and the old brittle plastic surviving the removal and re-installation are little if any.
