I have the chance to get a c6 out of a 81 truck that is bolted up ro a 302. My question is will it in fact bolt up to my 300 with my flywheel or do I need to change the flywheel as well? I would rather have the C6 because of pulling my boat with the truck.
302 uses a different flexplate, due to being externally balanced, while the 300 is internal.
I recently had to replace the flexplate on my truck (starter teeth chewed up) and the parts books all listed a different flexplate for a C4 & C6. No clue what the difference is.
I would suggest buying a new flexplate, they aren't but about $50 new, and it's cheap insurance since the trans is going to be out anyways. Probably need to ask for one to fit an 80 or so, as I don't think the C6 was factory offered behind a 300 until then.
I had an unusual 1978 F100. It was given to me by my brother, who purchased it new in Louisiana. Unusual in that it was a "plain Jane" Custom long wheel base with California emissions, 90 or 100 [I can't remember] amp alternator, dealer installed A/C, a huge radiator and the transmission was a C6. I would have thought that maybe someone special ordered it for towing, except that it was a F100 and the rear gears were 2.70:1???
Perhaps NumberDummy can assist by telling when C6 transmission was first offered behing the 300 engine?
