Ok I need some serious help. Im having a huge no start issue with my buddies truck and im lost. Its a 04 F350 with a 03 6.0 (not sure if that matters or not). We did the filter regulator blue spring upgrade, the truck ran fine before. Now all it does it turn over. If I hold my foot to the floor for about 10 sec of steady turning over, it fires up but I have to keep it to the floor when it fires off the RPM wont go over about 1500 and it runs like that for about 10-15 sec then it shuts off. There is exhaust coming from the engine bay I think from around the turbo. Never done that before either. Not sure if we installed something wrong with the upgrade kit not even sure if that's possible. Its been plugged in and everything is nice and warm. Like I said the truck ran fine before this expect or a injector going out. We did the kit because of a leak around the cover, and the filter cap, well both are brand new now and no leaks. So please help. The filter housing is full of fuel. TIA
Well, I would pull the regulator back out and inspect it. Make sure the o-rings and the little white piece are in the correct place.
Did you go back with OEM filters?
Do you have a way to check for codes, do you have a fuel pressure gauge on this truck, or can you use the test port on the HFCM where you did the upgrade? Now try the next step.
First, if you turn the key to on, can you hear the fuel pump filling, and then shut off after a minute or two?
Second, (read all of this, be careful) if you take the upper fuel filter cap off, and turn the key to on, does the bowl start to fill? You have to have someone watch it, the other on the key, and you have to be fast or you will have lots of diesel pouring on the ground.
If you can't hear it shut off in step one, and it can't fill the bowl, then I would take the blue spring regulator apart and check it all again.
Report back what you learn.
When you are done testing, please out a charger on the batteries or will cuae more issues with low batteries.
Blue spring is pretty straight forward. Don't imagine there's a problem there. One tiny o-ring on the back of the air bleed (small white piece of plastic in the top of the slot) might be easy to miss. Not sure that would be a no-start though.
It can take three or four key cycles to purge air and build starting psi after all that has been apart.
Did you have the air filter out? Maybe MAF sensor on the air filter tube near the brake master cylinder is unplugged and loose plug is touching a ground?
The harness just below the regulator cover goes to the fan clutch. Fuel can deteriorate the insulation, maybe it got moved around and is shorting too ground or wires are shorting together somewhere?
If you listen to the fuel pump when key is turned on it should run for 15-20 seconds (after second try- maybe longer the first time) and shut off by it's self (no cranking of the engine necessary, just flip the key on) Often you can hear it slow down just a bit as the pressure comes up. Unscientific description I know but hopefully you get my meaning. Checking fuel pressure with a gauge would be much better.
Good idea Rusty, to the OP, what else did you have apart to do the blue spring regulator? This could be a lot of things, but try what rusty suggests too. Let us know how this goes and perhaps we can help more.
When I did my blue spring I had a lot of fun putting it back together and not binding the spring, I used a bit of grease to hold that little plastic piece at the top of the slot, o ring on the cover ect.
Sorry mike , looks like we were typing at the same time. +1 on the code check. I'm grabbing at straws for the OP, lol. Interesting this is the second post like this recently.
The other one was in the blue spring thread and he didn't post back what fixed it.
Benny mentioned the FICM in that thread- good point. It wold kinda bee a fluke if it dies while doing a blue spring but if everything else looks ok a test of the output voltage would be a good next step:
ok I just plugged up the tuner and its showing no codes, I turned the key on and the fuel pump ran for about 20 sec then finally shut off. Not really sure how its suppose to sound, but it sounded kinda weird. not sure if its suppose to sound like a gas fuel pump or not so my weird might be completely normal.
I do not have a fuel pressure guage on the truck or one that would fit it. Can I just loosen that hex nut and fuel shoot out? Kinda like you do with a gas engine? And when I take the filter cap off, should I leave the filter in or take it out?

It does sound like an outside of tank pump, gas pump, kinda whines until it gets up to pressure and then changes tone and shuts off. I am thinking check the bowl filling thing suggested. I don't suggest taking off the pressure line, as the thing will make a mess, at least if it's going in the bowl, you can shut it off and suck out the contents, to put the filter back on. It does sound about right it shuts off in 20 seconds. I am stumped as when I did mine and it wasn't long ago, I only had to turn the key on three times, like I do when changeling fuel filter to prime and she started up no problems at all. The fact you have no codes is strange as well. I wonder if you have a newly developed issue just coincidence with the blue spring upgrade. How much fuel in the tank? Any leaks just running the key to on? If the filter bowl fills with the filter and cap removed, you are going to have to take it apart and re try assembly. Did you follow the tech folder and have all the right parts left over?
