electrical problem

Today when accelerating to merge onto the interstate My battery guage shot so far up it was reading off the guage, and the warning light was on... I was going about 85mph and the darn van wouldn't go into OD so it was reving kinda high...

Once I got in traffic and was able to slow down to about 75 it went back to 'normal'... Then after my exit had come and gone I was on a back road and climbing a hill. I had to floor it because it was a bad hill, it did the same thing again, and this time the A/C fan sped up real fast... Again when I slowed down it went back to normal.

What is goign on??? I am a little nervous to drive it right now... but if I have to I can as long as I don't have to floor it it is fine...

Any Ideas would be great!!!

Thanks,
-Mike-

electrical problem

Sounds a lot like the voltage regulator isnt regulating
I do not know if your van has an external regulator or not....probably not so take the alternator in and get it checked.
But chances are you need a new one...unless you are comfortable getting a rebuild kit and tearing into it. Not really too complicated just follow the instructions included with the kit.

yes, it was the voltage regulator. it's kind of internal and external... it is mounted on the back of the alternator. I'm taking the van in tomorrow to have it replaced. luckily the alternator is ok because I don't have enough dough pared out to cover the replacement of it, and the labor to install it.

It is running about 15.5 volts at idle, and it is spiking at around 20volts when I floor it, so yeah it definately needs to be replaced...
