Oil, just a question, not a problem
I have or have had 4 diesels in my life. The first was a 1980's Isuzu diesel. Bought it brand new and the first time I checked the oil it was black and they said that was normal for a diesel. I bought a 1994 H1 Hummer 6.5 L diesel 2 year lease return with 20,000 miles, oil black. I still have the Hummer and it has Amsoil bypass filter and the oil is still black (about 110,000 miles). I have a 30 year old John Deer tractor diesel , oil black. Last year I bought a 2002 F350 diesel with about 160,000 miles on it. The first thing I did was change the oil, brown, not black. Now with Amsoil bypass and 4700 miles since last oil change, oil light brown. Is this newer tech. that keeps more soot out of the oil or what?

Bypass filters on the newer diesels go a long way in keeping the oil looking pretty and fresh. But as Clux said, modern tech has come a long way. Even the gassers keep oil looking nice now compared to what they did 30 years ago.
He must be getting some incredible fuel economy then.
